Community Involvement
Information on community staff and services
The WEIT therapy team liaise closely with the early childhood centres that our children attend. We can provide a trained adult where appropriate who works alongside the child to ensure they get the most benefit from their time at their early childhood centre. These adults are called Education Support Workers or ESWs and they are employed and supervised by the Early Intervention Trust team of therapists.
Periodically, we offer training and professional programmes to parents, caregivers and extended family members as well as early childhood centre staff. This support can range from learning communication strategies such as Makaton sign, to training in understanding how a child learns and views the world. We find many of our children have strong sensory needs which make the world around them a very confusing place. Some training, information and support for the people involved in their daily lives can help a lot in supporting children and improving their ability to understand the world.
Extra-curricular fun and learning
Our children are just like all other children when it comes to enjoying the extra activities that make childhood so special. We can provide information regarding many community activities such as the most appropriate gym classes, swimming lessons and music groups available in the Wellington region. And most excitingly, we are offered positions with Riding For the Disabled (RDA).
